MAXHOSA SS27
There are fashion moments that feel bigger than the clothes themselves. At Paris Fashion Week, MAXHOSA AFRICA’s SS27 collection was one of them, a celebration of heritage, identity and the growing influence of African luxury on the global fashion stage.
Titled Izihlwele Zivumile, translating to “The Ancestors Have Approved,” the collection marked a defining milestone for designer Laduma Ngxokolo; MAXHOSA’s first full runway show on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar, following years of presentations in the French capital.
The collection was an unapologetic expression of African creativity. Graphic knitwear, intricate geometric motifs and vibrant colour brought traditional Xhosa references into conversation with contemporary silhouettes. From statement co-ords to sculptural occasionwear, each look spoke to a design language that honors its origins while confidently looking forward.
What made the show particularly compelling was its refusal to separate cultural authenticity from modern luxury. MAXHOSA’s work has always drawn strength from its South African roots, but SS27 demonstrated how that perspective can resonate far beyond them. This was not heritage reimagined for outside approval; it was heritage presented on its own terms. There is also something meaningful about the brand’s commitment to local production, with its own knitting factories in Johannesburg and the Eastern Cape, where the wool for its knitwear is sourced. The ambition extends beyond the runway to the future of South African craftsmanship and the possibilities of a more locally rooted luxury industry.
For me, MAXHOSA SS27 was a reminder that fashion’s most exciting future lies in designers who know exactly who they are. Paris may have provided the stage, but the story belonged to South Africa and to a vision of luxury that carries culture, community and craftsmanship into the next chapter. MAXHOSA is not simply arriving on the global fashion stage. It is helping redefine what that stage can look like.
