John Richmond SS27
This had to be the most fashion vibe-y show of the LFW season. As Sabrina and I arrived she was relentlessly paparazzi’d whilst I stood nearby catching the pre-show display. One attendee caught my eye as he arrived in a low sitting pair of pants and a shirt opened to the navel, having a full on conversation on his phone. As soon as he was aware of the photographers’ attention he posed effortlessly in multiple angles, continuing his conversation. There are designers who dress the moment, and then there are those who understand its soundtrack. This season, John Richmond returns to the rebellious spirit of British subculture with White Light, White Heat, a collection that feels as much like a live gig as a runway presentation. And the “red carpet” moments before the show definitely felt appropriate for what we were about to attend.
Staged in the atmospheric crypt beneath St Martin in the Fields during London Fashion Week, the show brought together the elements that have long defined Richmond’s world: punk attitude, glam rock glamour and a distinctly London sensibility. The palette leaned heavily into black and white, punctuated by flashes of red, pink and blue, while sharp tailoring met sheer lace, leather and reflective metallic finishes. There was a compelling tension between structure and fluidity, control and chaos.
What makes Richmond’s work feel relevant is his ability to revisit familiar references without becoming trapped by nostalgia. The silhouettes carried the confidence of another era, but the execution felt decidedly contemporary, a reminder that personal style is often at its most powerful when it refuses to play by the rules.
And, naturally, music was never far from the conversation. Named after The Velvet Underground’s iconic track, White Light, White Heat culminated in a live performance by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, bringing the collection’s central idea into sharp focus; fashion is not simply something we see, but something we feel.
This was the kind of show that reminds us why London remains such a compelling fashion center. At John Richmond, rebellion and refinement share the same stage, and individuality is always the main event.
