5000 Featuring Zakia SS27

There are fashion presentations that make a statement, and then there are those that make you feel something. For SS27, 5000 delivered the latter at London Fashion Week, inviting guests into a world where fashion, music and memory intersect.

Titled Tune In, Turn On and Drop Out, the presentation, held at 180 Studios, explored the complicated relationship we have with the idea of home. Rather than a traditional runway spectacle, the experience felt intimate and immersive, drawing guests into a carefully considered environment where clothing and sound worked together to tell a deeply personal story.

At the heart of the experience was music curator Zakia Sewell, whose thoughtfully assembled soundtrack gave the collection an additional emotional dimension. Through the presence of a handmade hi-fi sound system, record players and oversized speakers, music became more than a backdrop; it was an integral part of the storytelling. The result was an atmosphere that felt both nostalgic and contemporary, encouraging guests to consider how sound shapes our memories and sense of belonging.

The collection itself played with contrasts. Sharp tailoring met relaxed streetwear influences, with structured blazers, oversized silhouettes and bomber-inspired pieces creating an interesting dialogue between masculine and feminine dressing. A restrained palette of black, grey and muted checks was complemented by technical nylon fabrics, while fluid gowns with tailored detailing offered a softer counterpoint.

What made the presentation particularly compelling was its underlying message. Drawing inspiration from the writings of Simone de Beauvoir and James Baldwin, alongside the music of Gil Scott-Heron, designer Taylor Thompson explored the duality of home as both a place of comfort and confinement. It is an idea that feels especially relevant in a world where identity, belonging and personal freedom are constantly being redefined.

For me, the beauty of 5000's SS27 presentation was its refusal to separate fashion from the wider human experience. The clothes were considered and beautifully constructed, but it was the emotional narrative surrounding them that gave the collection its depth.

In a fashion landscape that can often feel driven by spectacle and constant newness, 5000 offered something more thoughtful; an invitation to slow down, listen and reflect. A reminder that fashion can be more than what we wear. It can be a language through which we understand ourselves, our histories and the places we call home.
