YAKU SS27

At London Fashion Week, where spectacle is never in short supply, YAKU SS27 reminded us that the most compelling stories can begin at home.

Titled Chapter 8: Can’t Rush Cooked Food, Yaku Stapleton’s latest collection took inspiration from family barbecues, childhood memories and the wonderfully exaggerated characters that make up a family. Presented at the British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN space at 180 Strand, the show blurred the boundaries between runway and performance, inviting us into a world that felt at once deeply personal and entirely fantastical.

The clothes were as characterful as the cast. Oversized tracksuits, distressed waxed cotton, slouchy leather and reptilian textures sat alongside playful accessories and prints drawn from Stapleton’s own childhood. Baseball caps emblazoned with family photographs and unexpected, video game inspired details brought a distinctly YAKU sensibility to familiar silhouettes.

What made the collection resonate was its shift in perspective. Rather than looking exclusively to distant histories or imagined futures, Stapleton found extraordinary potential in the everyday; the family stories retold at every gathering, the personalities we all recognise, and the memories that grow more mythical with time.

SS27 felt like an invitation to celebrate those stories, imperfections and all. In a fashion landscape often preoccupied with what comes next, YAKU made a compelling case for looking closer to home. After all, the best worlds are sometimes the ones we already know.
